Happy Canada Day!

This is turning out to be a better Canada Day than I thought. After all the controversy swirling around the possibility of Dr. Henry Morgentaler being awarded the Order of Canada, it turns out to be true. I just checked the Governor General’s web site and it looks like they posted the recipients just before I got there.

I was sitting around earlier today wondering if I was even going to do a Canada Day post because I couldn’t get my heart around doing the usual boilerplate stuff about how I love my country. Don’t get me wrong, I really do love my country, but I felt like something was missing, something to really celebrate.

Awarding Dr. Morgentaler the Order of Canada does the trick for me, it shows that cooler heads still prevail in this great nation. I noticed in some articles that people, mostly Conservatives, were suggesting that a person so controversial could never win the award, but if that were true, then the Governor General would be handing out a lot fewer awards.

Dr. Morgentaler has done more than anyone I can think of to help women in this country. He broke outdated laws, he went to jail, he fought injustice at a time when it was a very hard thing to do. He has had a very interesting life, one that few people could hardly handle, he’s a very cool dude.

I see in the time it took me to write this, the mainstream media is finally coming out from under their shells and reporting on a sure bet.
